How Will We Activate the Power of Positivity for 2017?
Posted by Karen McGee on Jan 10, 2017 in Blog, Intentions, Values and Core Beliefs | 0 commentsHow are you feeling about 2017? Are you happy, sad, enthusiastic, fearful, excited, worried, optimistic, pessimistic, uncertain, conflicted? You might be feeling all of these emotions and many more on a moment by moment basis as 2017 gets going. And since we’re all human and subject to our evolutionary programming, we have what’s called a negativity bias. That means we are naturally more sensitive to phenomena of a negative nature than we are to neutral or positive phenomena (stimuli such as thoughts, emotions, social interactions, or experiences.) This negativity bias was likely intended to keep us safe and was probably a very valuable survival tool during the early stages of human development. Now, however, in order to thrive in various domains of our lives, research has shown we need to maintain a specific balance, expressed as a ratio, of positive to negative.
Researcher and author, Barbara L. Fredrickson, Ph.D., reveals the optimum balance of positive to negative in her book, Positivity: Top-Notch Research Reveals the 3- to- 1 Ratio That will Change Your Life. In her book, she points out that we can increase our positivity and the benefits of doing so. And while Fredrickson makes recommendations and provides a tool-kit for increasing positivity in her book, she also says that what works to engender positivity is highly individual and unique for each of us. So, let’s get together and share our experiences and ideas with one another for activating the power of positivity in our lives.
Please join us on January 27th to share in the discussion and develop our own strategies and ideas for activating the power of positivity for 2017. Small changes can make a very big difference in our lives.
Please note: This is a “brown bag” event and it is recommended that participants bring their lunch to eat during the roundtable. We’ll also have beverages and popcorn or other snacks to share.
About the Roundtable: The Women’s Leadership Roundtable is a facilitated open forum for women, as leaders of themselves and others, to discuss relevant issues, build community and network, collaborate with, learn from, and support one another. It provides an opportunity for women to be heard, share their experiences, engage in thought-provoking discussion, and to generate ideas and growth together. The roundtable is an ongoing event, open to the public, held on the last Friday of every other month from January through September in a Denver area location. You are encouraged to attend as frequently as possible and bring your ideas, issues, and interests to the discussion. There is a $10 charge for the roundtable, paid in advance when registering online, and a $12 charge when paid at the door. For additional information, contact Karen McGee at 303-503-9681.
